The Mapex Interview with Stephen Mixson
Mapex: Tell us a little about your background.
Stephen: It all started with spoons, an end table and a lamp shade. The musician at my family church was a major influence in my life as a beginning drummer. My main focus at choir rehearsal was on the instruments, especially the drums. One day the drummer did not show up and I was given the opportunity to show my talent. The rest as they say is history. I’ve been the church drummer for more than 15 years.
I also played in elementary school band and continued in the school music programs into middle school and high school. I was in the Jazz Band, Symphonic band, Concert band, Marching band, and participated in the Percussion Ensemble for state competitions.
I’ve played with many Michigan local artists. I’ve learned through these experiences one must be diligent if you want to be a professional musician. Increasing my skills, displaying humility and gaining confidence are ideal goals I’ve set forth to accomplish.
Mapex: Who are your favorite drummers or influences?
Stephen: The development of my unique style is the result of a lifetime of musical influences. Many local Michigan musicians have inspired me to be a better person and musician. Everything I listen to directs my musical development in some way. I would say Mint Condition is one of my biggest influences.
Mapex: What are you currently working on?
Stephen: I’ve recently been playing at numerous gigs and making sure that my name is being heard by as many people as possible. Participating in the “Drummer of Tomorrow” Contest has given me the confidence boost needed to become a successful musician and pursue a long a-waited dream. I’m looking forward to relocating to Los Angeles, California within the next year to pursue a music career.
Mapex: Anything else you want us to know about you?
