The Mapex Interview with Michael Davila
Mapex: Tell us a little about your background.
Michael: I began my love for drums in church at the age of two. After every church service, you could find me playing the drums. By four, my grandparents bought me my first drum set. By the age of five, I became the church drummer. In the sixth grade, I joined my school’s band and found an even greater love for drumming encouraged by a wonderful band teacher Mr. Eikans. I began to play for different church events all over Southern California. When I graduated from High School, I realized that I didn’t want to just be a player, but be a musician. I began to strive and practice every day. Styles of music became an open road for me. I can play styles from Rock, Hip Hop, Latin, Fusion, Progressive, Contemporary, Gospel and much more.
Mapex: Who are your favorite drummers or influences?
Michael: My heroes are Chris Coleman, Mark Guiliana, Benny Greb, Dave Weckl, Dave Elitch, Tomas Pridgen, Jon Theodore, JoJo Mayer, Mike Johnston and Teddy Campbell.
Mapex: What are you currently working on?
Michael: I’ve been accepted to Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts in the Spring 2012.
