Joseph Maddox is from Gary, Indiana. He is 26 years old and has been playing drums for 25 years.
The Mapex Interview with Joseph Maddox
Mapex: Tell us a little about your background.
Joseph: : Robert Gates who played with Billy Dickens and Henry Johnson is my drum mentor. He is the main reason I can play with a band. When I first started to develop, everyone around me kept trying to pump my head up. He was the only person that told me I wasn’t as good as I thought I was and that there is always someone better. He taught me how to be confident without ever being arrogant.
My favorite style of music is Jazz fusion, but I also play Swing, R&B, Hip Hop, Latin, Gospel, Funk, and anything with odd meters.
Mapex: Who are your favorite drummers or influences?
Joseph: My absolute favorite drummer is Vinnie Colaiuta. If Jesus played drums I’m pretty sure he would probably sound like Vinnie. Other influences include: Ronald Brunner, Jojo Mayer, Kevin Hayden, Kimball Glaspie, Tony Royster Jr., Marco Minneman, Aaron Spears, Nathaniel Townsley, Rodney Holmes, Derico Watson, Chris Coleman, Steve Smith, Dejaun Watson, Terreon Gully, Dale Doback, and Animal from Muppet Babies to name a few.
Mapex: What are you currently working on?
Joseph: The Church I play for is Greater Saint Mark M.B, Church. The band I play with is named Duke Tumatoe and the Power Trio. We recently released an album in January called “I Just Want To Be Rich”. I also play with Rapper Mz Fe, the Dan Holmes Group, they’re a New Orleans Jazz and Blues group out of San Marcos, Texas, Bishop William Harris and Perfect Vision out of Louisville, Kentucky, their Gospel album “ReGenisis” will be released soon, the Fusion group Extreme Possibilities, Jonny Dial Organ trio, the R&B group 4reign out of Bloomington, Indiana and Jus Blessed Productions.
